October 2 - 4, 2009 - Weekend in Denver

October 2: Leaving Colorado Springs...

Our time with Elmer and Joanne Barney in Colorado Springs was so pleasant that we decided to meet for breakfast on Friday morning before leaving. "The Egg and I" restaurants haven't come to the east yet, but we're sure they'll be a hit when they do. Northeastern Colorado is a busy place, and Interstate 25 northward into Denver is chock-a-block with traffic. Denver itself is famous for many worthwhile reasons, but its traffic isn't one of them.

We discovered that our hotel was on the wrong side of Denver from the places we wanted to go, but Mary Frances is a Marriott Platinum Elite Premier member (meaning she's spent more time in Marriott Hotels than at home for a number of years) and they will accommodate her wishes even if it means throwing somebody into the street. (I'm only a Gold member so I don't have that kind of stroke.) So we were able to call a couple hours ahead of check-in and switch to a Residence Inn on the opposite side of the city. We didn't see anyone else's luggage tossed into the parking lot so we assume there was a room available.

We had planned to visit the preschool where our son Arthur cares for a room full of toddlers, but unfortunately we arrived at nap time and missed them. On weekends, Arthur's avocation is hiking to the summits of Colorado's 14,000-ft+ peaks. His goal is to complete all 56 of them; he's well on his way:

The Chicago Museum of Nature and Science...

On Saturday afternoon we visited this fine museum and watched an excellent show about black holes at its Gates Planetarium. The museum also has an outstanding diorama of Rocky Mountain wildlife, an I MAX theater, and many special exhibits.

Boulders Dinner Theatre...

Saturday evening we headed northwest to Boulder to attend the Boulders Dinner Theatre production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Both the Dinner and the show were delightful. Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take pictures, which explains why there are none here... :)

On the way back to Denver our faithful 2005 Mazda MPV passed the 80,000 mile mark, about half of which has come from cross-America trips like this one:

On Sunday, we spent a few hours at the Colorado Central Station Casino while our son hiked a mountain nearby. We came away modest winners. After a pleasant dinner at Pizzeria UNO, we said our good-byes to our son, and tomorrow we wend our way north through Wyoming to Deadwood, South Dakota.

We'll let you know all about it.
