Day Four: Railroads, Scrabble, Pasta and Farewell

Sunday in Columbus, the third (and last) day here to visit our son Dana's family. Midday we visited the Ohio Railway Museum in Worthington:

This is about as big as it is, folks.

OK, Disney World it isn't. What it is, is a small non-profit organization struggling since 1948 to keep the memory of regional rail travel alive, and to collect and maintain some trains and memorabilia. The major attraction is a 15-minute rail ride on a 1937 vintage passenger car (obtained from the Canadian Pacific Railroad some years back.) I wouldn't suggest driving hundreds of miles to see it, but if you happen to be in Columbus with an hour to kill and fond memories of trains, you could do a lot worse.

Since we had 45 minutes to wait for our train ride, and the day was quite warm, the Dairy Queen a few blocks away was a great place to wait:

Full of ice cream, we sped back to the museum and boarded. “Hello, Mister Conductor!” shouted Vic to the young man acting as our guide; quite a lot of communication for Victor, who enjoyed the ride immensely as did we all:

Vic's wearing a swim vest as a robot costume.

Violet is currently into Veronica Lake look with her hair.

No, Grammy is not trying to throttle Violet.

Back at Dresden Street, with a couple of hours to kill (after buying Violet a Wii to replace her broken one and un-buying it when the broken one turned out to be un-broken) Dana suggested a game of Scrabble for the grown-ups. Turned out to be a lot of fun for three games and victories were spread among us. How much more fun and sociable that is than staring into an iPhone at Flyin' Monkeys or some such by yourself. Especially when there are five other people in the room doing the same silly thing.

Grammy's winning at Scrabble.

After three games, it was time for us to head to downtown Columbus for a pasta feast at Spaghetti Warehouse, home of the biggest and best lasagna anywhere. The antiques decorating (or littering) the place were mostly of the same era as those we saw earlier at the Ohio Railway Museum.

Dinner at Spaghetti Warehouse

Good food, good company, but at the end unfortunately time to part and resume our journey (a word that Dana got in our Scrabble game, on a double word no less.) We're happy to have such a fine family in our family.

Tomorrow: southward to Nashville.
